Self Destructive Behavior Treatment

Do you have a bad habit that is literally hurting you? Do you find yourself repetitively touching, picking or scratching your skin? Have you bitten your nails to the point that they bleed. Has your coping skill become out of control? Maybe it’s time to ask for help.

The clinical term for self-injurious or self-destructive behaviors in which a person causes harm or damage to themselves or their appearance repeatedly, is Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs). Often times, these behaviors can occur when a person experiences feelings such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Excitement
  • Boredom

Self Destructive Behaviors include:

  • Skin Picking
  • Head-banging
  • Cutting, scratching, or pinching skin
  • Banging or punching objects to the point of bleeding
  • Ripping and tearing skin
  • Carving words or patterns into skin
  • Burning self with cigarettes, matches, hot water
  • Pulling out hair
  • Biting the insides of the cheeks
  • Nail biting

It can be difficult to ask for help

Individuals often experience a great deal of shame associated with this condition, which can make it difficult to ask for help. The treatment of repetitive self destructive behavior, involves individual therapy to target and treat the underlying emotional, environmental or interpersonal triggers through:

  • Education
  • Habit reversal training
  • Behavioral interventions
  • Behavior replacement
